Don’t miss this unique opportunity for a private tour of Raby Castle, which includes welcome refreshments and introductory talk by the Curator and a tour of private rooms not usually open to the public.
9.30am onwards: Arrival and welcome refreshments in the Entrance Hall.
10am: Introduction from the Curator of Raby Castle. Tour of the public route by Raby’s experienced guides.
11.20am: Off route tour by the Curator taking in Hunter’s Gallery, a valuable example of Pre- Strawberry Hill Gothick. Leading off the gallery the Cassells, Alcove and Don Quixote rooms will be viewed, the latter of which contains an amazing collection of detailed pen and ink drawings, telling the story of Don Quixote by Anne Vane, sister of the 1st Earl of Darlington and dated 1733. The tour concludes with viewing the State Rooms at the top of the imposing Clifford’s Tower. Formerly consisting of a State Drawing Room and Dining Room, these rooms contain impressive ceilings by Thomas Perritt and now store works of art and furniture not currently displayed on the public route. Latterly these rooms were used as a State Bedroom and State Dressing Room and include a fine example of 18th Century Chinese painted silk bed hangings which are usually under wraps, hanging on early 19th Century bed frame, possibly provided for the visit of the young Princess Victoria when she came to Raby.
