Raby Castle, the private home of Lord Barnard, is at the heart of the Raby Estates, which spreads across Teesdale, County Durham and Northumbria.
As well as the Home Farm in the Raby Park, there are many tenanted farms and a large number of houses and cottages in villages around Teesdale. Many dales families have been tenants for several generations. The Teesdale countryside is dotted with whitewashed farmsteads and houses.
The Raby Estates plays a major role in the structure of the countryside with the main emphasis being conservation. The Farm, Forestry and Game Departments work in unison to ensure that land management practices on the Estate enables the balance of conservation and agricultural objectives and standards.
The Raby Home Farm is now part of the national Countryside Stewardship Scheme where farming practices are modified to enhance flora and fauna on the lower Estate. As well as thousands of acres of arable, grazing and moorland there is also a large area of managed woodland.
Raby also employs a large team of craftsmen to develop and maintain properties and buildings across the Estate.
