Outdoor Shakespeare - The Handlebards: As You Like It

Raby Castle Walled Garden

Fri 28th Jul 2017

5:30pm to 8:30pm

The world’s first cycling theatre company, The HandleBards, pedal from venue to venue with all the set, props and costume necessary to perform environmentally sustainable Shakespeare across the globe.

Join their all-female troupe in the beautiful gardens at Raby Castle for a bicycle-powered production of Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’ like none other. In usual HandleBards style, expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter.

And what’s the play about? Well - Rosalind and Orlando have been forced into exile in the Forest of Arden. As lovers, they become entangled in a bizarre game of lust, love and mistaken identity.

Specialist Tour – The Work of James Paine at Raby

Raby Castle

Fri 8th Sep 2017

10:00am to 12:30pm

2017 is the 300th Anniversary of the Architect James Paine’s birth and the event is being celebrated in a number of houses where he worked, including Raby Castle.

Paine worked at Raby from 1752 until 1768, taking over from Daniel Garrett and the bulk of his work was completed by 1761.  In the latter years he was employed as a Consultant to the Earl of Darlington.

The Curator will lead this special tour highlighting Paine’s work at Raby. Guests will be given privileged access to see some of his work in areas of the Castle not normally open to the public, as well as having an opportunity to see some of his original plans.  Places will be limited and so early booking is advisable.

Cost - £25.00 per person, including refreshments in the Castle Entrance Hall on arrival.
