Orchid Show

Raby Castle Gardens

The Annual Orchid Show at Raby Castle, will feature a spectacular display of beautiful Orchids including exotic hybrid species. 

Visitors will have the opportunity to talk to the experts, attend lectures and demonstrations for advice on how to make the most of their orchids.  

The North East of England and Darlington Orchid Societies will be in attendance with a wonderful display, as well as orchid growers and sellers from around England and Europe.


Specialist Tour – The Work of James Paine at Raby

2017 is the 300th Anniversary of the Architect James Paine’s birth and the event is being celebrated in a number of houses where he worked, including Raby Castle. 

Paine worked at Raby from 1752 until 1768, taking over from Daniel Garrett and the bulk of his work was completed by 1761.  In the latter years he was employed as a Consultant to the Earl of Darlington.

The Curator will lead this special tour highlighting Paine’s work at Raby. Guests will be given privileged access to see some of his work in areas of the Castle not normally open to the public, as well as having an opportunity to see some of his original plans.  Places will be limited and so early booking is advisable.

Cost - £25.00 per person, including refreshments in the Castle Entrance Hall on arrival.

10k, 5k & 1.2k Races

Raby Park

Teesdale Athletics Club is once again holding it's annual 10k race and 5k fun run in Raby Park, there will also be 1.2km children's fun run!

It is strongly advised that you pre enter before race day and not leave it till on the day of the race.

Flower Power Plant & Gift Fair

Coach Yard

Flower Power Fairs return to Raby Castle Coach Yard with a hand-picked selection Northern plant growers and nurseries with wide choice of plants including herbs, herbaceous, alpines, shade lovers and small shrubs.  There will also be stalls from a selection of the best local small businesses in the area including photography, garden accessories, gifts & jewellery. 

Plus the beautiful Raby Castle Walled Gardens to wander through, including the rose garden, fruit garden and the herbaceous borders.

Classic Vehicle Show

Raby Castle

This summer, Raby Castle will once again play host to the 24th Bi-Annual Classic Vehicle Show and Vintage Rally, organised by Mark Woodward Classic Events.

Listen to the purring of excellently restored engines and admire the beautifully waxed bodywork of the classic cars, vintage vehicles and timeless transport at this long established show.

The Raby Castle Classic Vehicle Show is a perfect day of motoring nostalgia. Displayed within its breath taking parkland will be commercial vehicles, Land Rovers, trucks, bikes, 4 x 4’s and classic cars including MGs, Triumph Stags and Austin Seven’s.

There’s also the motor awards to look forward to, an auto jumble for anyone looking for a bargain or a rare discontinued part, and an arena and commentaries throughout the day.  Add to that the chance to speak to exhibitors about their passion, this fun packed day out will get even the most keyed up of classic car enthusiasts into gear!

National Garden Scheme

Raby Castle Walled Gardens

The Walled Gardens will be open in aid of the National Garden Scheme on Saturday 15th July. Admissions from tickets sold to visit the Park & Gardens only will be donated to the National Garden Scheme.

The National Garden Scheme, which celebrates its 90th year in 2017, is the most significant charitable funder of nursing charities in the country, donating over £50 million since it was founded. The gardens at Raby Castle are one of 80 gardens which opened in the first year of 1927 and are still open today.

The main charities to benefit from the National Garden Scheme are: The Queen’s Nursing Institute, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Carers Trust, Hospice UK, Perennial, Parkinson’s UK and other guest charities.

Outdoor Shakespeare - The Handlebards: As You Like It

The world’s first cycling theatre company, The HandleBards, pedal from venue to venue with all the set, props and costume necessary to perform environmentally sustainable Shakespeare across the globe.

Join their all-female troupe in the beautiful gardens at Raby Castle for a bicycle-powered production of Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’ like none other. In usual HandleBards style, expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter.

And what’s the play about? Well - Rosalind and Orlando have been forced into exile in the Forest of Arden. As lovers, they become entangled in a bizarre game of lust, love and mistaken identity.

Gates open: at 5.30pm, performance begins at 6.30pm

Running time: 2 hours including interval

Age suitability: suitable for all ages, but recommended for ages 5+.
