11:00am to 5:00pm

The Annual Orchid Show at Raby Castle, now in its 14th year, will feature a spectacular display of beautiful Orchids including exotic hybrid species.  Visitors will have the opportunity to talk to the experts, attend lectures and demonstrations for advice on how to make the most of their orchids.

Dr Richard Warren, co-organiser of the show and a member of the British Orchid Growers Association states "Once again this will be a fantastic display of orchids for North East England."  He continues to say "As well as showing some of the rare, exotic and unusual plants, our aim is to illustrate reliable types of Orchids that people can grow on their own window sills or in their own gardens. We encourage visitors to bring their problem Orchids along to the show, where we can offer advice and guidance".

The show at Raby has become one of the most significant orchid shows in the north. The North East of England and Darlington Orchid Societies along with the Orchid Society of Great Britain will be in attendance, as well as orchids growers and sellers from around England and Europe.

  • The castle itself will be closed on Saturday 3rd May.

TAC 10k & 5k Races

Raby Park

Sun 18th May 2014

Teesdale Athletics Club is once again holding it's annual 10k race and 5k fun run in Raby Park, there will also be a brand new 1.2km fun run!

The new 1.2k fun run is one lap from the start and then cuts back past the front of Raby Castle to the finish area.

Run it just for the fun of running it or make a day of it and bring the family.  If you've run it before, why not come back to improve on your previous time?

Race Information:

  • Start Times: Please Note: There are new start times for both Races, 5km Fun Run will start at 10:00am. 10km will start at 10:45am.
  • Entrance and Exit: Please use the RACE ENTRANCE at the SOUTH GATE, closest to Staindrop and the church – this will be signposted (use DL2 3AE in SAT-NAVs).  The RACE EXIT will be from the same gate until 13:00 HRS, after which the south gate will be closed and you will exit from the north gate.
  • Getting 'dropped off' on race day: Please DO NOT access Raby Estates through the South Gate if you want to drop people off. The road from the South Gate to the car parking area is single track only and due to the steady flow of traffic coming in it will not be possible for people to simply ‘drop’ people off and leave, it is therefore suggested that if you are simply intending to drop someone off that you do so in Staindrop village.
  • Please be aware that the Race Start is 15 minutes walk from the parking area.
  • Late Entries: Will be located next to the road between the car park and the start. It will close promptly at 09:15 for the 5km and 10:00 for the 10km. Please allow plenty of time and don’t forget your safety pins, race numbers must be clearly visible at all times.

Entry forms and further information can be downloaded at www.teesdaleac.com.

Entrants can also apply on-line at www.runnersworld.co.uk or www.ukforms.net.

Illyria Outdoor Theatre: George’s Marvellous Medicine

Raby Castle Walled Garden

Fri 18th Jul 2014

6:30pm to 8:05pm

It's the first day of half-term, Grandma has written to say she is coming to stay, and George is going to have to give up his bedroom for her. It wouldn't be so bad if Grandma were a nice Grandma. But George's Grandma is horrible. "George do this!" "George do that!" "George is it time for my medicine?" What's the point of taking medicine, George wonders, when it's clearly not doing her any good, and it certainly isn't making her any nicer? So George decides to concoct his own medicine which he gives to Grandma - with hilarious results! Following their enormous successes with JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH and FANTASTIC MR FOX, and a record-breaking, sellout season of THE TWITS, Illyria returns with yet another Roald Dahl classic full of (literally) larger-than-life characters, plenty to join in with, and just a twist of malicious fun! It's guaranteed to send you through the roof!

Suitable for all ages 5+.

Set in Raby’s idyllic Walled Gardens, Illyria are sure to delight and enchant the whole family, so bring along a rug, a deckchair and a picnic to enjoy this classic children’s story brought to life.

Gates open at 5.00pm for pre-show picnics, the performance will begin at 6.30pm.

  • Adults (age 16+): £14.00
  • Children (5 - 15 yrs): £12.00
