Exclusive ‘Behind the Scenes’ Castle Tours

Every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday in October (excl. Wed 3rd & Thu 4th), 11am

For the first time, Raby Castle will open on selected dates in October for exclusive tours of previously unseen rooms. Join one of our knowledgeable Guides, who will tell fascinating stories of the Castle’s history and provide a rare opportunity to visit areas of the Castle that are not usually accessible to the public.

Enjoy a unique glimpse behind the scenes and view the Castle from a completely different perspective.

Tickets £25.00 per person

Places are limited each day and so booking is essential

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Certain areas of the Castle are only accessed via narrow staircases so unfortunately these areas are not accessible to wheelchair users.


Christmas Gift Shop

Raby Park

The Raby Gift Shop will be brimming with unusual gifts and stunning decorations in the run up to the festive season and will be open daily from 9am. A Christmas shopping event will be hosted in early November for those wanting their gifts and decorations to have a bit of castle magic this year.

We will also have available traditional toys and games for children, festive homeware and specially selected Christmas decorations.


Christmas at the Tearooms

Raby Castle

Open daily from 9am

Warm up after a winter stroll in the Walled Gardens and enjoy hot drinks, seasonal snacks, lunches, cakes, afternoon tea and daily hot specials in the Tearooms, housed in the old stables at Raby Castle.

Our new horsebox kiosk outside will be serving warming mulled wine and other festive treats to enjoy and take away.


October Half Term

Join the fun at Raby Castle with a Halloween themed treasure trail and children's tours from Saturday 20th to Sunday 4th November.

Halloween Trail

Families can explore the 200-acre deer park and take part in a Halloween Trail through the Park & Gardens, where Children can search for spooky clues! There is no need to book but a Park and Gardens ticket is required.

Children's Tours of the Castle

Join our Friendly Footman for a special interactive children’s tour of the Castle which has been host to knights, royalty and aristocracy through the ages. Find out what it was like to be knighted and how the Castle was defended from attack, there’s plenty to see including horse-drawn coaches and carriages from days gone by.

  • Children’s tours will take place every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday throughout October half term
  • Children's places on the tour are limited so advanced booking is advised
  • Accompanying adults must have a full price adult ticket
  • The children's tour is suitable for ages 4 to 8, but all members of the family are welcome
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • Meet your guide, Mike the Footman at the Coach Houses at 10.30am 
  • The Castle will be closed apart from for the guided tour

Eating and Drinking

Come and see our fully refurbished tearooms, browse our new look gift shop and enjoy the woodland play area, all of which are free of charge for visitors. The tearooms are open daily from 9am for Autumn themed specials like toffee apples and pumpkin lattes as well as favourite ice creams, drinks, snacks, lunches and afternoon teas.

Room on the Broom Walks

23rd, 24th & 31st October

Book for one of three special Room on the Broom Walks this October Half Term, on Tuesday 23rd, Wednesday 24th and Wednesday 31st October, come to Raby Castle to join Bright Woods Forest School CIC on a Halloween ramble inspired by Julia Donaldson’s Room on the Broom book. Follow the witch and her companions enjoying some fun activities along the way.  To top it off toast some ghostly marshmallows around a campfire at the end.

Families can also explore the 200-acre deer park and take part in a Halloween Trail through the Park & Gardens, where Children can search for clues to claim their reward! 

Why not stay for lunch in our fully refurbished tearooms, browse our new look gift shop and enjoy the woodland play area, all of which are free of charge for visitors. The tearooms are open daily from 9am for ice creams, drinks, snacks, lunches and afternoon teas.

Advance booking essential as we can only accommodate a limited number of people on this walk.

Cancellations: Please let us know if you are unable to attend. In case of strong winds or thunder and lightning we will postpone or cancel the event. This event will still go ahead in rainy conditions.

Clothing: Please dress for the outdoors in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We recommend that all participants wear hard wearing trousers (these should be tucked into socks), long sleeved tops, sunhats or no hats (depending on the weather) and waterproof clothing if it is raining. Also, you may consider using insect repellents.

Access: The walk can be manageable with a buggy or on a wheelchair but there are areas of gravel and uneven ground. Some areas might be muddy at times. Please get in touch if you require assistance.

Dogs: Dogs are not allowed on this walk with the exception of guide dogs.

Distance: About 0.5 mile with stops for activities.

Age and supervision: All children must come supervised by an adult who will be responsible for their safety during the walk. This is a family walk suitable for children age 1 to 7 but please bear in mind that the youngest children will require a greater deal of adult assistance. Children older than 7 are also welcome at parental discretion.


Fireside Stories with Father Christmas

Father Christmas will be returning to his fireside chair in the castle’s grand entrance hall to entertain children with his fun stories and songs.

Gather round the fire for a magical experience and soak up the festive atmosphere in this remarkable setting, which will be beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Father Christmas is looking forward to meeting everyone and he will have a special personalised present for each child.

Tickets for this Father Christmas experience include: a visit to see Father Christmas in Raby Castle’s Grand Entrance Hall, an invitation from Father Christmas and a personalised gift, plus entrance for up to two accompanying adults. Each session will last approximately 45 minutes and will be limited to 30 children to make the experience extra special.

Ticket prices: Child (includes 1 adult): £20.00, Child (includes 2 adults): £22.50

High Tea with Father Christmas

Children can enjoy a delicious afternoon tea of sandwiches accompanied by a selection of Mrs Claus’ homemade treats including gingerbread muffins, chocolate brownies and candyfloss ice cream.

After High Tea, take a winter stroll to the Castle where Father Christmas will be waiting in the Grand Entrance Hall beside the roaring fire and impressive Raby Christmas tree. Children will be captivated by his stories and will enjoy singing along to his favourite songs before being presented with a special personalised gift. For a cosy, friendly atmosphere spaces are limited to 30 children per session.

Ticket price per child: £30

Enjoy a delicious breakfast of warm fluffy pancakes and a selection of tasty toppings for children to choose themselves, served with a hot chocolate or a fresh apple or orange juice.

After breakfast, take a winter walk to the Castle where Father Christmas will be waiting in the beautifully decorated Grand Entrance Hall. Gather round the fire to listen to his stories and sing along with him before he hands out a personalised gift to each child. This will be an exclusive experience with spaces for just 30 children per session.

Christmas Trees

Raby Castle

Throughout December (1st to 23rd) Christmas trees, grown locally on the Raby Estate, will be on sale along with a selection of handmade wreaths and decorative foliage. Pick your own tree from an impressive selection of Nordman Fir and Norway Spruce available in the Coach Yard. 

This year Elvis (the cheeky!) Shetland pony will be on hand helping deliver Christmas trees to your car!


Festive Afternoon Tea in Raby Castle

Bring friends or your whole office party to enjoy an indulgent festive afternoon tea in Raby Castle’s Grand Entrance Hall which will be beautifully decorated for the festive season with a roaring fire and huge Christmas tree. You will be served a delicious selection of sandwiches, homemade cakes, scones and cream with freshly brewed tea in this truly magnificent setting.

After tea, there will be an opportunity to glimpse into rooms decorated as they would have been in days gone by ready for family and friends to gather for Christmas.

The Grand Entrance Hall will be set out with tables for 10 during these special events, providing a perfect opportunity to join together with family, friends and colleagues and take a table for a unique festive celebration.

Our Christmas craft workshops will run on selected dates throughout December and must be booked in advance. All workshops include tea or coffee refreshments and mince pies.

Festive Door Garlands - Monday 3rd December, 10am till 12.30 and 1.30 till 4pm, £35 per person

With expert guidance from our visiting florist and using fresh foliage from the Raby Estate along with seasonal flowers, berries and accessories, learn how to make your own decorative door garland for your home.

Festive Mantle Piece Garlands - Monday 10th December, 10am till 12.30 and 1.30 till 4pm, £35 per person

With expert guidance from our visiting florist and using fresh foliage from the Raby Estate along with seasonal flowers, berries and accessories, learn how to make your own decorative door garland for your home.

Festive Fresh Holly Wreath Making - Tuesday 11th, 10am till 12.30 and 1.30 till 4pm, £35 per person

Make your very own holly wreath from scratch, with guidance from our visiting florist. You will be shown how to add moss to a wire frame before decorating it in your own unique style choosing from the plentiful selection of foliage provided and a choice of seasonal decorations including orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cones and much more.

Make Your Own Willow Reindeer - Tuesday 4th December, 10am till 4pm & Wednesday 12th December, 10am till 4pm, £50 per person

Make your very own enchanting willow reindeer, guided by our expert tutor. Learn the basic skills and techniques used to create this festive favourite and enjoy creating your own reindeer to adorn with fairy lights and decorate your home or garden for Christmas.

Willow Christmas Crafts Half Day - Wednesday 5th December, 10am till 12.30pm and 1.30 till 4pm, £35 per person

Spend a creative morning or afternoon learning how to make your own festive willow crafts. Learn from our expert tutor and try your hand at Christmas tree decorations such as stars, wreaths and hearts or let your imagination go wild and use your newly acquired skills to make something unique to take home.

Willow Christmas Crafts Full Day - Thursday 13th December, 10am till 4pm, £50 per person

Start your day learning the skills and techniques needed to make beautiful decorative items and gifts with willow before using your new-found knowledge and creativity to make willow angels, willow Christmas trees and everything in between.

This is a perfect opportunity to buy stocking fillers, delicious food and drink for your festive guests and to source unusual gifts for friends and family.

Some of Father Christmas' reindeer will be making a special visit to Raby for two days during the Festive Market,  and the Elvis (the cheeky! Shetland pony will be helping deliver Christmas trees to your car!
