22nd Classic Vehicle Show

This summer, Raby Castle will once again play host to the 22nd Bi-Annual Classic Vehicle Show and Vintage Rally, organised by Mark Woodward Classic Events.

Masonic Gala

Raby Park

Taking place in Raby Park for the first time since 2009 is the Raby Gala. A family event day organised by the Freemasons of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham. Visitors to the event will be entertained and amused be able to eat, drink and take part in an abundance of colourful events on show within the castle grounds. There will be a Craft Marquee, Commercial Stalls, over 100 Lodge Stalls, plus the Entertainment Marquee and Display Ring will have live performances throughout the day. There will be displays of vintage cars, motorbikes and cycles as well as many other interesting shows and displays.  All proceeds from the event go towards the 2021 Festival in aid of the Royal Masonic Trust for Boys and Girls. The Raby Gala is a public event open to everyone.

Please purchase tickets in advance for this event.

This ticket entitles you, your car and passengers to access the Raby Gala on Satureday July 2nd from 10am.

Outdoor Theatre: Shakespeare’s Richard III performed by The Handlebards

“A bike! A bike! My kingdom for a bike!”

Described by none other than Sir Ian McKellen as “uproariously funny”, the four-strong all-male HandleBards present Shakespeare’s plays as you’ve never seen them before - fast-paced, irreverent and bicycle-powered. Since 2013, the HandleBards have pedalled over 5000 miles across the world, carrying all their set, props and costumes on just four bicycles. On Friday 22nd July they’re stopping off at Raby Castle to perform their rip-roaring production of Richard III. Expect a “gloriously eccentric and very, very funny” (The Stage, on A Midsummer Night’s Dream) night, delivered on eight very sore legs.

Enjoy a different type of outdoor theatre in Raby Castle’s idyllic Walled Gardens, bring along a rug, a deckchair and a picnic to enjoy this Shakespearean story told in a different way.

Gates open at 5.30pm

performance begins at 7.00pm

Please bring your own seating/rug, warm clothes & picnics/drinks.

This week drop in to these outdoor circus skills workshops in the Raby Gardens to learn all sorts of circus skills from plate spinning to ball juggling and more!

Plus: giant games on the lawn, free activity sheets to help explore the Castle, and there’s plenty of wide open space to play in the deer park.

Taste of Teesdale Festival

Organised by Barnard Castle Farmers Market and held in the grounds of the Castle, 'Taste of Teesdale Festival' brings together an abundance of artisan food and drink from across the region. From bangers and bread, to pickles and pies, meet and buy from local producers as chefs’ prepare some mouth-watering dishes for all ages. Look out for farming displays and a whole range of special activities to make Taste of Teesdale a great day out for all the family. This one day festival will celebrate everything brilliant about local food, with demonstrations & children’s activities, as well as lots of stalls to stock up on quality local produce.

Outdoor Theatre: Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl

In their 25th anniversary year Illyria, now one of the country’s foremost interpreters of Roald Dahl’s work, has been able to secure the rights to perform a 5th Dahl title. Danny and his devoted father live in a caravan and operate the petrol station and garage. When Danny turns nine he is devastated to find out about his father’s secret passion for pheasant poaching in the estate of the nasty, greedy Victor Hazell, the local wealthy landowner. One night, Danny awakes to find his father has not returned from a night of poaching. Fearing that his father may be in danger, Danny sets off to rescue him. Soon, with a little help from the village, Danny finds himself the mastermind behind the most incredible and exciting plot ever attempted against Victor Hazell. Illyria promises a magnificent, funny and heart-warming story perfectly suited to the open-air.
