Orchid Show

Raby Castle Gardens

  • The Annual Orchid Show at Raby Castle, now in its 16th year, will feature a spectacular display of beautiful Orchids including exotic hybrid species. 
  • Visitors will have the opportunity to talk to the experts, attend lectures and demonstrations for advice on how to make the most of their orchids.  
  • A handpicked selection of local plant nurseries will also be in attendance, selling garden plants from the Coach Yard in the grounds of Raby Castle.
  • The show at Raby has become one of the most significant orchid shows in the north. The North East of England and Darlington Orchid Societies along with the Orchid Society of Great Britain will be in attendance, as well as orchid growers and sellers from around England and Europe.

10k, 5k & 1.2k Races

Teesdale Athletics Club is once again holding it's annual 10k race and 5k fun run in Raby Park, there will also be 1.2km children's fun run!

It is strongly advised that you pre enter before race day and not leave it till on the day of the race.

Masonic Gala

Raby Park

Taking place in Raby Park for the first time since 2009 is the Raby Gala. A family event day organised by the Freemasons of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham. All proceeds from the event go towards the 2021 Festival in aid of the Royal Masonic Trust for Boys and Girls.

Outdoor Theatre: Shakespeare’s Richard III performed by The Handlebards

"4 actors, 4 bicycles, 40 characters and a 1000+ mile adventure."

After hugely successful tours in 2013, 2014 & 2015, the four-strong, all-male HandleBards company are back on their bikes and cycling the UK in June, July and August 2016, before setting out across Europe. On just four bicycles they will carry all the necessary set, props, costumes and camping equipment to perform Shakespeare's 'Richard III'. 

The HandleBards is Shakespeare done differently - using bikes to power various surprises and contraptions on-stage, whilst playing ALL the parts, this will be a spectacle not to miss!

Enjoy a different type of outdoor theatre in Raby Castle’s idyllic Walled Gardens, bring along a rug, a deckchair and a picnic to enjoy this classic Shakespeare story told in a different way.

Gates open at 5.30pm

performance begins at 7.00pm

Please bring your own seating/rug, warm clothes & picnics/drinks.

Taste of Teesdale Festival

Organised by Barnard Castle Farmers Market and held in the grounds of the Castle, 'Taste of Teesdale Festival' brings together an abundance of artisan food and drink from across the region. From bangers and bread, to pickles and pies, meet and buy from local producers as chefs’ prepare some mouth-watering dishes for all ages. Look out for farming displays and a whole range of special activities to make Taste of Teesdale a great day out for all the family. This one day festival will celebrate everything brilliant about local food, with demonstrations & children’s activities, as well as lots of stalls to stock up on quality local produce.

Admission on day: £6 per vehicle, includes Park, Gardens and Taste of Teesdale Festival

Outdoor Theatre: Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl

In their 25th anniversary year Illyria, now one of the country’s foremost interpreters of Roald Dahl’s work, has been able to secure the rights to perform a 5th Dahl title. Danny and his devoted father live in a caravan and operate the petrol station and garage. When Danny turns nine he is devastated to find out about his father’s secret passion for pheasant poaching in the estate of the nasty, greedy Victor Hazell, the local wealthy landowner. One night, Danny awakes to find his father has not returned from a night of poaching. Fearing that his father may be in danger, Danny sets off to rescue him. Soon, with a little help from the village, Danny finds himself the mastermind behind the most incredible and exciting plot ever attempted against Victor Hazell. Illyria promises a magnificent, funny and heart-warming story perfectly suited to the open-air.

The Moscow State Circus

The Moscow State Circus returns to the UK with its latest & greatest production to date, based on the Russian folklore story of Cvetik-Semicvetik, or “the flower with seven colors,” by Valentin Petrovich Katayev where each of the petals represent a wish and is the perfect back drop for what is undoubtedly the greatest & most famous circus on earth.

Wizard Wacko & is crazy side kick Natalia Mezentceva invite the audience to a wondrous & mysterious enchanted garden, a place where dreams come true and a place to see magnificent feats of human achievement, the like of which have never been witnessed in Great Britain before.

As our Loveable Buffoons guide us through this tantalising tale, granting wishes to the beautiful Kushka Veslovskaya who plays Zhenya, surrounded by a multitude of flying, back flipping, juggling, wire walking & roller-skating performers.

Autumn Market

The annual autumn local food and craft market at Raby Castle. Wander around our market street with covered farmer’s market style stalls lining either side of the old Byre Yard close to the Raby Tearooms and Gift Shop and discover the best of our region’s food producers and craft makers.
