Outdoor Theatre: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Raby Castle Walled Garden

Wed 22nd Jul 2015

6:00pm to 7:45pm

Illyria are back at Raby Castle to perform this traditional family show.

The original boy-wizard story, most famously told in Disney’s Fantasia, starring Mickey Mouse. The apprentice is told to fill a bath with buckets of water and has the bright idea of using magic to make a broom do the job for him. When the bath is full he realises he does not know how to stop the broom fetching water. In desperation he saws it in half – but this is just the start of everything spiralling out of control. This show features breath taking magical illusions, non-stop laughter and more water than you have EVER seen in a play before! There’s a spectacular set from the designer of George’s Marvellous Medicine, amazing effects from the scenic builders of The Twits, original music by Paul Dukas (as used in Fantasia) – and we hope to announce shortly that our magical consultant is the world famous illusionist Paul Daniels!

Suitable for all ages 5+.

Set in Raby’s idyllic Walled Gardens, Illyria are sure to delight and enchant the whole family, so bring along a rug, a deckchair and a picnic to enjoy this classic children’s story brought to life.

Gates open at 5.00pm for pre-show picnics, the performance will begin at 6.00pm.

  • Adults (age 16+): £16.00
  • Children (5 - 15 yrs): £14.00

Outdoor Theatre: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by The Handlebards

Raby Castle Walled Garden

Thu 6th Aug 2015

6:30pm to 8:30pm

"4 actors, 4 bicycles, 40 characters and a 1000+ mile adventure."

On just four bicycles they will carry all the necessary set, props, costumes and camping equipment to perform one of Shakespeare's greatest plays –'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

The HandleBards is Shakespeare done differently - using bikes to power various surprises and contraptions on-stage, whilst playing ALL the parts, this will be a spectacle not to miss!

Outdoor Theatre: Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe performed by Illyria

Raby Castle Walled Garden

Fri 14th Aug 2015

7:00pm to 9:00pm

Iolanthe, a fairy, falls in love with a mortal. Her death sentence under fairy law is commuted to banishment by the Fairy Queen. 25 years later her son falls in love with the Lord Chancellor of England’s ward. The Lord Chancellor is Iolanthe’s husband, who, believing her dead, intends to marry his ward himself. If Iolanthe lets her son marry his love she devastates her husband – but if she tells her husband she is alive then her original death penalty is re-invoked. Gilbert and Sullivan’s most magical comic opera is set half in Fairyland, half in Westminster. It’s hilarious and surprisingly topical satire pokes fun at love, Politics and Britishness, and many believe its sumptuous harmonies to be the most beautiful Sullivan wrote. Following the runaway popularity of HMS Pinafore, The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance, Illyria returns with another romantic summer operetta to leave you with a song in your heart.

Suitable for all ages 5+.

Set in Raby’s idyllic Walled Gardens, Illyria are sure to delight and enchant the whole family, so bring along a rug, a deckchair and a picnic to enjoy this classic children’s story brought to life.

Gates open at 5.30pm for pre-show picnics, the performance will begin at 7.00pm.

  • Adults (age 16+): £18.00
  • Children (under 15 yrs): £16.00

(All Children must be accompanied by a paying adult)
