Raby Castle will be open for the first time this November and December for visitors to explore the Deer Park and enjoy the views from the Castle terraces. Our Tearooms and Christmas shop will be open daily from 10am until 5pm for warming drinks and local craft beers, festive treats and seasonal shopping. Raby Castle will be open for the first time during October Half Term this year giving families an opportunity to enjoy spooky treasure trails, children’s castle tours, games, crafts and much more. This will be the first year that the castle and grounds have been open during the autumn. The British Library has selected a 300-year-old work of art from Raby Castle’s private collection to illustrate its Discovering Literature project. The painting of poet Alexander Pope holding a copy of the Iliad, which he translated, is by Sir Godfrey Kneller and dates back to 1719. It is part of the castle’s extensive art collection and hangs in the Dining Room of Raby Castle, in Staindrop near Darlington, where it is on public display.
