Summer Activities and Events at Raby Castle

Enjoy a summer of fun at Raby Castle with activities for the whole family right through the school holidays.

Our garden trails and children’s castle tours are back by popular demand and we have a host of special events including outdoor theatre, our August Bank Holiday Tap and exciting Forest School activities.

Plus, our Tearooms, Gift Shop and Woodland Play Area are free of charge to visitors. The Tearooms are open daily from 9am for ice creams, drinks, snacks, lunches and afternoon teas.   

Garden Treasure Trails

(Park and Gardens Ticket required)

Daily

Treasure Trails are back this summer with new clues to hunt for as you explore Raby Castle’s 200-acre deer park and gardens. Complete the challenge and claim your treasure.

Children’s Castle Tours

(Castle, Park and Gardens Ticket required)

Every Thursday and Saturday 10.30am to 12.30pm 23rd Jul to 2nd Sep

History comes to life as Mike, our Friendly Footman, hosts a summer season of interactive children’s tours of Raby Castle. Find out what it was like to be knighted and how the castle was defended from enemy attack. There is so much to learn and plenty to see.

Children’s tours will run every Thursday and Saturday morning throughout the school holidays. Tours are included with your Castle, Park and Garden ticket. Buy in advance online on purchase a ticket when you arrive, then meet Mike at the Coach Houses at 10.30am. Children’s tours are suitable for ages 4 to 8 and all members of the family are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

Forest School Events

Bows & Arrows – 21st August & Gruffalo Walk – 28th August

Numbers are limited for these events so book early to secure your place on one of our exciting outdoor learning experiences.

On August 21st learn how to make your own bows and arrows to put your survival tactics to the test.  

Then, on August 28th Raby Castle’s park and gardens will be transformed into a deep, dark wood for a morning of activities inspired by Julia Donaldson’s much-loved character the Gruffalo.

Family bike hire

(Park and Gardens ticket required. Additional hire charges apply for bikes and helmets)

Daily

The huge expanse of open space at Raby Castle offers an idyllic cycling environment and a chance to glimpse the castle from different angles. Look out for red deer, fallow deer and plenty of other wildlife.  The views across the lakes, surrounding countryside and back towards the Walled Gardens can be breathtaking, especially on a clear day, and there are plenty of peaceful spots to stop and relax. Bikes cost £7 for adults and £5 for children. Family tickets are available at £20 for 2 adults and 2 children and £24 for 2 adults and 3 children. Helmets can be hired for 50p. To find out more about bike hire please ask at the ticket kiosk.

Outdoor Theatre

Romeo and Juliet – 4th August 6.30-8.30pm

Twelfth Night – 10th August 6.30-8.30pm 

Raby Castle will be the backdrop for two fun outdoor theatre productions in August by cycling theatre troupe Handlebards. On Saturday 4th August Raby Castle will host a production of the famous love story Romeo and Juliet and on Friday 10th August Handlebards will be back to perform Twelfth Night.

Both shows will be performed in the open air so please dress for the weather and bring a picnic chair, rug or cushions. Pre-book a picnic to collect on the evening with picnic blanket provided. Picnic for two £25 - call 01833 660541 to place your order. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages will also be available. 

Tickets are £15 in advance (under 16s free) and are available to book online. There are options to combine your theatre trip with Park and Gardens or Castle, Park and Gardens admission for a full day out. 

Sparkling Summer Evenings

Friday 17th & Friday 31st August

5pm-8pm 

Join us for one of our exclusive evening openings in our Walled Gardens with a guided tour and time to relax and take in the picturesque surroundings and castle backdrop, glass in hand. Red, white, rosé wine and prosecco are available along with local craft beers. Book an indulgent picnic to collect and take with you to enjoy in the Gardens. Optional guided tour starts at 6pm.

•  Gardens evening entry: £5 per person (Spend £5 or more on the evening and we’ll take the ticket price off your bill);

•   Picnic Ticket for two people: £25 (picnics must be booked in advance, includes entry to the Gardens and a picnic for two to collect from the Tearooms and enjoy in the Gardens);

•   Prosecco Ticket: £6 (includes entry to the gardens and a glass of prosecco on arrival)

We politely remind visitors that their own food or drink is not allowed at this event

Garden Tour & Sparkling Afternoon Tea

Join us for a private guided tour of Raby Castle’s picturesque 18th Century Walled Gardens followed by an indulgent Afternoon Tea with a glass of prosecco, served under our outdoor canopy. Places are limited and can be booked in advance at www.rabycastle.com/shop

Classic Cars in the Park

Raby’s spectacular Medieval castle will be the backdrop for a classic car themed event in the Park with a chance for visitors to explore inside the castle too.

Castle & Classic Cars tickets are bookable in advance and include entry to the castle where our experienced guides are on hand to share tales about its colourful history. Explore the castle kitchens, which were in regular daily use for over 600 years, and state rooms including the Dining Room and Baron’s Hall which have hosted knights and royalty.

Tickets include access to the classic car event in the grounds where we will have an extensive display of over 400 classic cars, including club stands from Jaguar, Aston Martin, Lotus, Ford. 

Ticket prices: Adults £12, Children 5-15 £6, Children under 5 FREE.

August Bank Holiday Garden Tap Weekend

Sat 25th Aug 2018 to Sun 26th Aug 2018

11:00am to 7:00pm

Join us this August Bank Holiday weekend for a unique event in the stunning Walled Gardens of Raby Castle in association with local craft brewery McColls. We’ll have lots of family activities, with forest school crafts, Fairy Trail, face painting, archery and birds of prey along with craft beer, gin bar, music and street food.

Normal garden entry prices will not apply on these dates. Garden Tap ticket prices are £10 for adults and £3 for children over 5, per day. Under 5s go free.
