Robert Hillary, a Tour Guide who has worked at Raby Castle for 8 years, has been short-listed for this year’s Durham Tourism Superstar Award in recognition of his hard work and dedication.
The competition, which is now in its third year, is run by Visit County Durham and seeks to honour and celebrate tourism professionals who go the extra mile to ensure visitors enjoy their stay.
Robert began working as a guide at Raby Castle after retiring from local government. He grew up in Raby Avenue, Barnard Castle and fondly remembers family visits to the Castle, so it seems fitting that he was to eventually work here. Robert is an exceptionally natural guide with a warm and friendly personality and is an excellent ambassador for Raby Castle.
Visitors often leave comments in the visitors book about him, one visitor even describing him as a star: “Great tour – Robert you are a star! Thank you for a fab day”. Other visitors have also praised Robert: “… our tour guide, Robert Hillary, was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. He clearly loves his role.”
In his own time he gives talks to community groups about the Castle and its history and is always requested as tour guide when these groups visit the Castle. Robert certainly goes beyond the call of duty and says he is honoured to have been nominated.
